Imagine a town founded by rebel slaves, then craft an intricately woven collection of short stories written “about blackness in the varied and multitudinous ways that I’ve experienced it.” The result is The World Doesn’t Require You, Rion Amilcar Scott’s much heralded and widely praised second book of short stories.
Kirkus Reviews says of the collection: “Mordantly bizarre and trenchantly observant, these stories stake out fresh territory in the nation’s literary landscape.”
Join Rion as he reads from the stories in this book, discusses the drafting of the individual stories, and the strategy for the collection as a whole. He will also delve into elements of craft for short story writing.
The World Doesn’t Require You (Norton/Liveright, August 2019) was awarded the 2020 Towson Prize for Literature and was a finalist for the 2020 PEN/Jean Stein Book Award. His debut story collection, Insurrections (University Press of Kentucky, 2016), was awarded the 2017 PEN/Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction and the 2017 Hillsdale Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Rion Amilcar Scott’s work has been published in journals such as The Kenyon Review, Crab Orchard Review, and The Rumpus, among others.
