Barrington Senior Center, 109 Shreve Avenue, Barrington NJ
or virtually on Zoom.
Near-future science fiction is generally considered to be fiction that takes place in the next 50 years. As technology advances, climate changes, and political systems modify, our view of the future and what might be actual “fiction” changes rapidly.
In the unusual times we’re now living in, join us for a panel discussion on writing near-future science fiction, and how to incorporate political and technological elements into your writing.
Our panelists will be:
– Author Jon McGoran, author of the Doyle Carrick environmental thriller series DEADOUT, DRIFT, and DUST UP, and the YA near-future medical & political science trilogy SPIKED. Jon is the former editor of the Philadelphia environmental magazine GRID. His new book, the near-future cyberpunk thriller THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING, will be published by Solaris Books in April 2025. Visit his website at www.jonmcgoran.com
– Omer Keles, Environmental Management Office (EMO) intern at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, specializing in research of space sustainability and multi-stakeholder space policy. His first peer-reviewed article focuses on adaptive policymaking approaches to space debris, and the follow-up GitHub project collects and analyzes data on known debris in space, which can interfere with not only rockets and the International Space Station, but satellites and telecommunications here on Earth.
– Kimberly Unger, author of the cyberpunk thriller THE EXTRACTIONIST, and mixed/virtual reality and game developer. Kimberly created her first videogame back when the 80-column card was the new hot thing. This turned a literary love of science fiction into a full blown obsession with the intersection of technology and humanity.
Today she spends her day-job time in MR, lectures on the intersection of art and code to anyone who will listen and writes science fiction about how all these app-driven superpowers are going to change the human race. You can find her on Insta at @Ing3nu or on her blog at www.ungerink.com.
Our panelists and moderator will be hosted virtually; however, our group will still be meeting at the Barrington VFW. Members may participate virtually or in-person. This is an open event and all are invited, so please share!
