Open Mic Coordinator, Jord Fox, performing his poetry at a previous SJWG Open Mic

When: Friday, November 8, 2019 – 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM
Where: Tree House Coffee Shop and Cafe – 120 W Merchant St, Audubon, New Jersey 08106

The SJWG Open Mic is an “open to the public” evening event that showcases the creative output of our members, and potentially others.  Here is a chance to read your work to an appreciative audience. Each presenter gets 10 minutes to share poems, a story, a book excerpt, songs, or other creative performance art. We’re a community of writers, so let’s share what we’ve written with each other and with the public!

Due to increased demand for performance slots, it’s first come, first serve. Readers/performers must check in before the start time to claim a performance slot. The first 13 slots are guaranteed to SJWG members, assuming 13 members desire a slot.  Beyond that, the slots are awarded on a first come, first serve basis to members and non-members alike.

It is strongly recommended that readers/performers rehearse their work in advance so they’re accustomed to speaking the work aloud.  Rehearsal also serves to make sure the piece fits within the time allotment. You may bring additional material to share, just in case we finish early, as we sometimes do.  While it might seem daunting to speak publicly, this event is a great opportunity to try-out your material on a real audience, and for each of us to better understand what others are working on.  Self-promotion is encouraged, but please do not use your time on stage to sell your book to the audience.  Off stage, it’s fine to have books or creative works with you for whatever purpose.

The Tree House Coffee Shop and Cafe

CONTENT and THEMES – Please Note:

The Tree House Café is an all-ages, family-friendly establishment and not every patron will necessarily be there for the readings.  As such, vulgar language, profanity, and explicit sex scenes are not acceptable.  Similarly discouraged are particularly dark themes, such as extreme violence, sexual violence, or child abuse.  If you have any concerns about your content or theme, please bring those concerns up with the event coordinator, Jord Fox, when signing in to participate.
